Chapter 22: A Sister Goes Abroad
The steward packed eleven trunks for a woman who owned one bag.
They stood in the front hall in two rows, each with a brass lock and a label.
Ilysanne stood in front of them in her plum coat, reading the labels with her thumb on her chin.
"Court gowns," she read.
"Second court gowns, spare court gowns, and gowns for sudden diplomacy."
"A princess abroad must be ready for sudden diplomacy," said the steward.
"I am a princess on holiday," said Ilysanne.
"One is not permitted to say so abroad."
Seravelle sat on the royal mounting stool by the stairs with a plate of bread and cheese.
She was eating her breakfast on the best seat in the hall and had no intention of getting up.
"I take the bag," said Ilysanne.
"And that trunk."
She pointed at the smallest, which was labeled Umbrellas.
"What is in it?" asked the steward.
"Nothing at all," she said.
"I will fill it myself."
The steward made a mark in his ledger.
He drew out a scroll and unrolled it across the floor.
It reached the foot of the stairs.
