Chapter 15: Go Home, Son
Seb's POV
I buttoned my trousers and went down the loft stair without hurrying.
Behind me she was pulling her cardigan around her.
"Seb," she said quietly.
"I'll stand between," I said.
"I won't touch him."
"Promise me."
"I never lay a hand on a drunk man," I said.
That was true, and she knew it.
I went down into the nave.
The light from the organ lamp reached halfway down the aisle and stopped.
He stood at the far end by the holy-water font, swaying, in his good plaid shirt untucked, with a bottle in one hand.
He had been crying.
He had the look of a boy who has run away from something and found he has run to the same place.
"Where is she?" Gabe said.
"Above you, and she's tired," I said.
"Go home, son."
"Don't call me that," Gabe said.
"Then go home, Mr. Landry."
I walked down the aisle to him.
I did not hurry, and I did not slow.
I had walked toward men with worse than a bottle, in places with worse than pews.
He swung at me when I was four feet away.
He swung wide and slow, and I stood still and let him miss.
The glass went past my ear and his arm kept going and took him half around.
He staggered into the font, and holy water slopped down his shirt.
I did not catch him, and I did not move.
I stood in front of the door and let him see that I was not going to give him a fight.
He looked at my hands.
They were open.
He started to cry.
It came out of him in great ugly gulps, and he sank down on the stone step under the font with the bottle between his knees.
