Chapter 20: The Armory
The armory in Lafayette is a long brick building with a flag out front and a motor pool behind, and on the eleventh of November it smelled of floor wax and smoked brisket.
Four hundred people sat at folding tables under a banner that said honor the fallen.
I wore the blue dress, because nobody was going to tell me what to wear, and because I had decided it belonged to me now.
Seb wore his dress blues.
I had not seen them before.
They were dark and straight, with the rows of ribbons on his chest and a castle pin on the collar.
He had come out of the bedroom at the hotel and stopped in front of me with his hat under his arm.
"Well?" he said.
I had not been able to speak for a moment.
"Command Sergeant Major," I said at last.
"Yes, ma'am," he said, and looked at the floor.
We came in through a side door and were halfway to the head table before anyone noticed.
A young man in a sergeant's uniform stopped dead between two chairs with a tray of coffee.
He was perhaps twenty-three, with a burn scar on his neck and his hair cut close.
He stared at Seb.
"Sergeant Major," the young man said.
The tray shook.
"Sergeant Major Guidry, sir."
"At ease, son," Seb said.
"What's your name?"
"Second platoon, Sergeant Major," the young man said.
