Chapter 22: Yes With a Date On It

Fiora's POV

He came at nine, with nothing in his hands.

I opened the door of my own apartment, and he stood in the hall with the rain on his shoulders.

"You brought nothing," I said.

"You said."

"Come in."

He took off his shoes by the door, and I watched him do it.

He walked into my living room in his socks, looked at the couch where I had sat on the floor three weeks ago holding a shoe, and then he sat down on the floor himself, with his back against it.

I sat across from him, our knees almost touching.

"I told you I'd say it when nobody was here," said Massimo.

"You did."

He took a breath.

"Fiora Ruggieri. I would like you to be my wife."

He said it in Sicilian, low, with no ring and no speech.

"I'm not asking for the family, or for the table. I'm asking because I would like to wake up next to you for the rest of my life, and I would like to be the one who makes your coffee."

My eyes stung.

"You make terrible coffee," I said.

"I'll learn."

"I'd like to keep my job."

He blinked.

"Your billing job?"

"Monday I go back to my desk at the clinic. I like the people, and I like being good at something nobody on this earth is trying to kill me over. I want it on the same day as the Ruggieri seat. Both."

"Both," he agreed. "Of course."

"And I'd like to say yes in front of everyone, where they can all hear it. Not tonight."

He smiled slowly.
