Chapter 16: The Test

Mara's POV

The test took four minutes, and I did not enjoy one of them.

They stood me at the foot of the table, on a worn square of the floor where the old women of the families had been tested for a hundred years.

Eleven men looked down at me.

Behind me, against the wall, Darius stood with his hands open at his sides and no ring on his finger.

I could feel exactly where he was.

"Speak a command," the thin elder said. "Plainly. To the room."

I looked at Silas.

He had turned his head a little to the side.

At the edge of his ear, where the grey hair met the skin, there was a pale pink smear.

Wax.

He had stopped both his ears.

"Kneel," I said.

It came from the same place as before, low and easy, and it filled the hall to the beams.

Chairs scraped.

Ten men dropped to the floorboards at once, grunting, with their hands flat on the wood.

The thin elder knelt slowly, shaking his head at his own knees.

Only Silas stood, in his grey suit, at the head of the table.

He smiled at me.

"As you see," he said, loudly, because he could not hear himself. "She commands what she can make hear. But a wolf who plugs his ears is not bound. A wolf who does not wish to be bound is not bound. What kind of law is that, to the pack?"

The men on the floor looked at each other.

"Get up," I said.

They got up, slowly, with their faces red.

"You're proving my point," Silas said. "She cannot rule through a locked door. She can only frighten the ones who listen. The law says the Seat is real when she gives her word freely in the hall to an Alpha, before every family. Let her do that now."
