Chapter 11: New Terms
She was gone all day, and he did not call.
Ye-rin came back at nine that night with a bag of groceries and a fountain pen she had bought at a stationery stall.
Seo-jun was standing in the kitchen where she had left him, in the same shirt.
"Sit," she said.
He sat.
She tore the paper off the pen, found a clean index card from her exam bundle and wrote across the top in her plain round hand.
NEW TERMS.
"You've been inside that house twenty-four years," she said. "You decided what it was for me. You gave me a key card and a story and a room, and I did what you needed."
"Yes."
"I'm still going to do it. But I'm doing it for my reasons now, and you're going to hear them."
She held up one finger.
"One. My mother is not a villain in your story until I have heard it from her. Nobody asks her anything. Not you, not the chairman, not me, until I say it's time."
His jaw tightened.
"She stood in that corridor."
"I know. She was thirty years old and holding a sick baby and she's carried it for twenty-four years. If you go to her door with that face, she'll tell you nothing, and I need her to tell it to someone." Ye-rin did not look away. "I need her to choose to."
"And if she won't?"
"Then we find another way for the eleven," said Ye-rin.
She held up another finger.
"Two. Everything told. No more locked rooms. No more hedge. If you know it, I know it that day."
"Yes," said Seo-jun.
"Three. You don't speak to the chairman about me, or my mother, or this, without me in the room."
"That one's hard," he said.
"Say it's hard and agree."
A corner of his mouth moved.
"It's hard," said Seo-jun. "I agree."
