Da-hee gave them the key to the kitchen door and said she would be at a hotel until Monday.
"The house is mine to lock, as of Thursday," she said. "I am told that is a promotion."
She did not ask what they wanted with it.
At eleven that night, Ye-rin let them in by the back stair.
She had walked this passage ten thousand times with a tray, and tonight she walked it with a man's hand in hers.
The kitchen was dark and smelled of old oil and scrubbed steel.
Seo-jun found the switch, and the long fluorescent tube over the range flickered and caught.
It was all exactly where she had left it.
The low stool by the stove.
The big scarred table where the staff had eaten in shifts.
The iron pot on its hook, with a black crust on the bottom from years of rice.
"Here," said Ye-rin.
She sat on the stool.
It was a foot lower than any other seat in the room, and she had spent her whole childhood on it, shelling beans.
Seo-jun stood in front of her in his dark coat.
"I've been in this room ten thousand times," he said, "and I never once sat down."
"Sit down now."
"On the stool?" he asked.
"On the table, then."
He sat on the edge of the staff table, and she got up and stood between his knees.
