Pippa stepped over the threshold, stopped, and went back for her other slipper.
I made a sound I was not proud of.
She returned at once with it in her hand.
"Mine," she said.
"Entirely mine."
I pressed my palm against my chest and waited for my heart to believe her.
My cousin put the slipper on beside the porch.
She used my shoulder to balance, then took it away when she was steady.
No door had closed behind her.
The house hadn't found a reason to keep her for forgetting a shoe.
The ghosts followed us down the steps in a loose, untidy group.
One stopped to look at the sky until Rosamund nudged him out of the path.
The woman who had carried the cup looked down at her empty hands.
She rubbed her palms together, smiled, and put them in her pockets.
