Chapter 9: What Gordon Was Paid

My father sat down on the hearth with burned fingers and told me everything in a flat, tired voice.

Ansel had come in behind me and shut the door.

He stood against it with his arms folded, and he did not say a word.

"Your mother was a Thornbury," my father said. "You know that. You were never told what it meant."

"Tell me now."

"Her father built the company. When he died, he left all of it to his daughter's children, not his son's, because he trusted her."

"Desmond," I said. I knew the name from the business pages. "My uncle."

"Her older brother. He ran the company in trust until her line came forward."

My father rubbed his eyes.

"Your mother hated that company. She was a chemist in its lab."

"She found something there, and she was afraid, and she ran."

"Ran where?"

"To me. I was her lawyer. She was seven months pregnant."

I sat down on the edge of the desk.

My legs wanted me to.

"They found her when you were one," he said.

"A man from the family office came to this house in a gray suit. He said the family only wanted her safe and her child provided for."

"And what did he want?"

"Silence. No Thornbury name, ever, and no claim on the company. If she stayed hidden, they paid. If she came back, they took the child."

"And you took the money."

"Your mother took the deal," my father said. "To keep you. She told me to take it and to keep you quiet, and I did."

"She died when I was nine."

"Yes."

"And after that you kept taking it."
