Yuwei walked out into the middle of the Hall of Clear Dawn.

She stopped three paces from the dais and knelt.

Her knees met the cold floor, and her back stayed straight.

"Your Majesty. May I answer?"

"You may."

"Everything my mother says is true."

A gasp rippled through the hall.

Lady Tao's eyes lifted, bright and quick.

"The girl she gave to Anbei was left-handed," Yuwei said.

"She was afraid of the dark, and she hated crab, and she could not look a stranger in the eye."

"She was starved by a household that sent her a dish every day."

"She was married to a sword, in a house where nobody wished her well."

She raised her head.

"She nearly died of it."

"I was ill for a week, Your Majesty."

"The physician who attended me will tell you that it was a long fever, and that most do not wake."

The hall was very quiet.

"I woke."

"I was hungry, and I was angry, and I was not afraid anymore." She turned her head, slowly, and looked at the woman in brown.

"Mother says I am a stranger."

"I think she is right."

"She never knew me."

The mother's face flushed an ugly red.
