Chapter 21: Qinghe
The house at Qinghe was smaller than she had pictured, and a great deal better.
It stood at the end of a path of crushed white stone, in a fold of the southern hills.
A low wall ran around it, with a round moon gate.
Two courtyards, a tiled roof the color of old plums, and one huge plum tree in the inner yard whose branches reached over the eaves.
The stars were out when they arrived.
A caretaker had lit the lamps and gone home.
No one else was within a mile.
Yuwei walked slowly through the moon gate with her bundle in her hand and stopped in the middle of the inner yard.
The silence was enormous.
She could hear a stream somewhere, and crickets.
The creak of the cart as the driver turned it around to wait at the bottom of the hill.
"Well?" said Chengzhou, behind her.
"It's mine."
"The deed says so."
"No, I mean." She turned in a circle. "It's mine. Nobody can come in. Nobody can send me a dish."
"Not unless they want to be thrown in the stream."
She laughed, and her eyes stung.
She had spent her whole life in rented rooms, hospital dorms and office chairs.
Now she stood in her own courtyard, in the dark, with a plum tree.
He did not say anything clever.
