Chapter 23: The Blue
It was my harbor.
It was the gray harbor, but from a window high above it, in winter, with the red buoy gone.
Where the buoy had been, there was a blue I had never mixed.
It was the blue of a bruise a week old, cold and deep.
One warm thread of red ran through it.
I knew the whole painting at once.
I had not made it yet.
"It's called Four O'Clock, After," Zane said, behind me.
"It's the third in the room."
"The ninth, the museum, third floor."
He turned the next canvas around, and the next.
Thirty of them.
They were all mine, and none were.
Each was painted in a hand just short of my own, careful and a little afraid.
It was the work of a man who had stared at a thing for years and learned it by heart.
"Forty paintings," I said.
"These are thirty."
"I could only remember thirty."
His voice was thin.
"You'd have them all by the ninth, June."
"I know every stroke."
"I can't give you the years, but I can give you the paintings."
"Six weeks, and nobody ever knows."
