The cross went into Spring Bayou at noon, white against the green water, and forty boys dove in after it.
A seventeen-year-old came up with it over his head, and the whole shore roared.
I stood at the rail with the sun on my face, seventeen weeks pregnant in a coat I did not need.
Marigo stood on my right in black, with her handbag held in front of her in both hands.
