"September," Chris said.
He said it flat.
"The week the school cut the board money," Leander said.
"The notice went up in the main hall, and you read it twice."
"Everyone read it."
"I stood with Bradford and watched you."
Chris remembered the notice and the cold gray feeling in his stomach.
He had not seen anyone watching.
"You went white," Leander said quietly.
"Then you straightened your tie, as if nothing had happened, and went to class."
"That was the day I started thinking."
"About what?"
"How to help you without you finding out."
Chris stared at him.
"A week later I saw you near the lake, early, with a rolled sleeping bag."
"You went into my grandfather's boathouse and came out without it."
