Chapter 9: The Night Call

I paid my mother's landlord in cash that Friday afternoon, all three months, with the first of the Kostka money.

Then I sat on my childhood bed in Lawrenceville with my boots off and the radiator knocking, and I listened to the rowhouse be quiet.

My mother was at the church fish fry until ten.

The single lamp threw a yellow circle over the old quilt and the plaster saint on the shelf.

My phone buzzed on the pillow.

LEO.

It was nine forty at night, and rule three said I did not answer.

I was off the clock, and I was not in that house.

I answered with the video on.

"Hello," Leo said.

He was sitting on his bed in the carriage house with a lamp behind him and his hair damp.

He wore nothing on top.

"You look good in a quilt," he said.

"You look freshly showered."

"I am. I thought about calling for an hour." He smiled. "May I tell you what I thought about?"

"I'm off duty," I said. "Tell me."

"I thought about your voice on the stairs. The sound you made in the car."

His eyes held mine through the screen.

"Do you want to hear what I'd do if you were here?"

"Yes," I said.

"Then lie back, Siobhan," he said. "Put the phone on the pillow where I can see your face."

I propped the phone against the headboard and lay down.

The quilt smelled of my mother's lavender detergent, and I felt ridiculous and wide awake.

"I'm in a twin bed," I said. "With a saint watching."

"Turn her to the wall."

I laughed.

I reached up, turned the plaster saint to face the wall, and Leo grinned.

"Better," he said. "Now. Take off your sweater."

I took it off.

"Slowly. I'm not going anywhere."

I drew it up over my head and tossed it onto the floor.

My bra was plain white cotton, because I had not known anyone would see it.

"Perfect," Leo said. "Take that off too."

I unhooked it and lay back with my hands at my sides.

He looked at me for a long moment, and the line of his throat moved.
