Chapter 7: Marks Under the Uniform

Tae-gang had never dressed so fast in his life.

Ju-an threw the oil bottle under the desk, shoved the quilts into a pile, and flung a handful of ink stones across the floor.

"Scholar's mess," he whispered, wild-eyed. "Trousers. Now."

Tae-gang jammed his legs into them and wound the band over his chest with shaking hands.

Ju-an dragged his robe on, pushed up his spectacles, and slid the bolt.

The warden filled the doorway, a stout man with a lantern and a ledger.

He sniffed.

"Ink," he said. "And flowers."

"Camellia hair oil," Ju-an said, politely. "I have a sensitive scalp."

"And the smell of the other thing?"

"What other thing, sir?"

The warden looked at him a long moment.

Then he looked at Tae-gang, whose collar was buttoned to his jaw and whose face was the color of a boiled crab.

"The bathhouse bolt was broken last night," the warden said, writing in his ledger. "Third-years complained."

"Anyone found out of bed after the bell is on latrine duty for a month."

"Understood," said Ju-an.

"Understood," said Tae-gang.

The door slid shut.

They stood very still until the boots faded.

Then Ju-an sank onto the quilts and put his face in his hands, laughing without sound.

"Stop," Tae-gang said. "Stop, I'll start."

"You're the color of a persimmon."

"You have a sensitive scalp!"

They were both gasping by the time the morning bell rang.
