Chapter 15: The Trade

"My terms," Sawyer said, and his voice went out over the loudspeaker's hiss and the silent rows.

"You are in no position," the speaker began.

"The surgeon operates first. In the infirmary, with Dr. Neumann at the table and the door open."

He turned to the yard boss.

"You stand at that door until the old man is closed up and breathing."

The big man nodded once.

"The water comes back on in this yard before I reach your office," Sawyer said. "I'll hear the pipes."

The speaker was quiet for a long moment.

"Agreed," Sallow said at last, and sounded almost cheerful. "Do come along, Mr. Harlan."

Lorena had got Wicks onto a stretcher made of two weight benches and a blanket.

She did not look up when Sawyer knelt.

"If he dies on the table," she said, "that's my table, not yours."

"I know."

"If you don't walk out of that office, I'll burn it down."

"I know that too."

She grabbed the front of his shirt in one fist and hauled him down.

The kiss was brief and hard, her chipped tooth against his lip, her glasses knocked crooked.
