Chapter 23: The Receipt
The patrons' dinner was in a ballroom off Park Lane, under chandeliers the size of cars.
There were two hundred guests, half of them Foxcroft donors and half of them flown in from Boston.
I knew most of the Boston faces.
They had clapped for me at the brunch.
I wore the green dress, and my mother's lipstick, and a gold band on my left hand.
Benedict walked beside me in black tie, and he did not let go of my fingers.
The banner over the stage read Generosity Lives Here.
Miriam stood under it in silver and pearls, shaking hands.
She looked rested.
She looked like a woman who believed the evening would go as planned.
She saw me, and her smile went bright and flat.
"Susannah. How nice you came."
"I was invited as a donor."
"So you were."
She turned to the room and tapped her glass.
"Friends. Thank you for crossing an ocean for a good cause."
Polite applause.
"This year the foundation has had a difficult season," she said. "Certain young people have confused kindness with obligation."
