"I knew," Cordelia said again, "the moment she put that band down on my podium."
"I knew her by the way she stood."
"I knew her by the white at her temple, which is my mother's."
The hall did not breathe.
"And I told three hundred guests that her mother was a thief, so that no one would look at her face and see mine."
"That is the first wrong I did this month, and I did it knowingly."
A rustle ran back through the rows.
"The second is the reason Mr. Kenworthy is here."
She lifted one hand and pointed down the table at him.
Roland did not move.
"In 2011 I asked this company to amend its bylaws."
"The clause says that no chief executive may be named, or removed, without the written consent of the chairman."
"You have heard it called the veto."
"I wrote it myself, in a week, to a deadline that was not the company's."
"The deadline was Roland's."
She paused, and I saw her decide to say it.
