Chapter 14: Every Message
Lance stood at my gate with his hands on the iron bars and his forehead nearly touching them.
He had not shaved.
His good shirt was on inside out, and he held his phone out in front of him in both hands.
"Hal," he said. "Thank you. Thank you for coming out."
"Don't thank me."
Rafe stood a step behind my shoulder, and Lance looked at him and flinched.
"He's not going to hit you," I said. "That's your side's trick."
"I know. I know it is."
"Say what you came to say."
"She dropped me." The words came out in a rush. "I called her at midnight and she said she didn't know who I was. She said I was the one who forged your listing. She's already told her lawyer the signature was mine."
"The signature was mine," I said. "On page eleven."
"I know! But she handed me the pages. She told me where to put the little yellow flags."
I did not open the gate.
"You're the man who knelt in my lobby," I said. "You hid a house sale in a stack of insurance forms and called me stupid for signing it. Why would I help you?"
"Because I can prove it was her."
He held up the phone.
The screen was a message thread, long and gray, with her name at the top.

I took it through the bars.
I scrolled up, and kept scrolling.
It went back fourteen months.
Wear the gray suit when she's sad, it makes you look safe.
Don't propose in a restaurant. Do it at her dad's grave so she can't say no.
Freeze at the door of the courthouse. Do NOT blink. If she moves, you lose, and she pays.
