Chapter 22: The River Returns
The roof of water came down.
It did not crash.
It folded, and the first thing Jinghan felt was Luo's arm around him.
"Hold on," Luo said.
"To what?"
"Me."
The black ceiling poured down the walls and rose from the floor to meet itself, and the chamber filled with a clear green light.
Jinghan breathed in water, and it was air.
The statue lifted her face.
The crack across her heart ran with light, and as he watched, it closed.
The stone girl stepped down from her plinth, made now of the whole pool.
She was transparent, bright as a river at noon, with her long hair floating up and her cupped hands full of stars.
She did not look fourteen anymore.
She looked as old as the valley, and as new.
"Thank you," said the spring.
It was her own voice now, no longer theirs, and it came from the air.
"You were so loud," she said. "I was never so warm."
"Go home," Luo said, his face wet.
"I will not forget it."
She bent and kissed him on the forehead, and then Jinghan, a touch like the first cold of a morning stream.
Then she went up.
The stair, the pillars, the tablet and the floor under them all swept up in a spiral of roaring water.
The two men went with it, upward, through the pool and out into the evening air.
Jinghan broke the surface with Luo's braid in his teeth.
They were thrown clear onto the stones of the Gate as the black pool erupted behind them in a column higher than the arch.
It was white at the top and green at the root, and it screamed.
The twelve spikes of Gate-stone around the rim shrieked together.
They were meant to ring her in.
"Hold!" Pei cried. "Hold the ring! Hold, I tell you!"
