Chapter 16: The Memo

Mallory didn't come into the room.

She stood in the doorway, holding her phone against her coat.

"You have two minutes," I said.

"It's a voice memo. I recorded it in March."

"Why in March?"

"Because that was the month I realized I was scared of him." She gave a short, ugly laugh. "I started keeping things. Screenshots, receipts. I thought if he ever turned on me, I'd have something."

"And you kept it from me."

"Yes."

She walked across the room and set the phone on the corner of my desk, between the box of crayons and a jar of glue sticks.

She pressed play.

A kitchen faucet ran, and ice rang in a glass.

Tucker's voice came out, loose and slurred and delighted with itself.

"You know what my favorite thing I ever did is, Mal? Not Jos. Not the condo."

"Tell me," said Mallory's voice, small.

"The text. Three in the morning, Halsted Street, his phone sitting right there on the counter like a gift. One line." He laughed. "Corbin's father is dying in a hospital, and I'm typing him out of her life with my thumb."

I put my hand flat on the desk.

"And the phone?" Mallory's voice asked.
