Chapter 10: Where People Can See

I did not open the video in Tierney's dining room.

I opened it in the penthouse, in the dark, sitting on the edge of Declan's bed.

"I'll watch it with you," he said from the doorway.

"No."

"Miriam, she sent it to hurt you, and it works better if you watch it alone."

That was true, and it stopped me.

I held the phone out, and he sat beside me.

The video ran two minutes.

It was filmed from a shelf in this room, with the lamp on.

I saw Declan and I saw Tierney, and I saw exactly what I had been afraid of for three weeks.

I did not look away.

Near the end, Tierney's voice came clear over the sound.

"She'll never find out," she said. "She keeps everything locked up, Dec. You know that."

And Declan's voice, thick: "She never told me one real thing."

The screen went black.

The room was so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator in the kitchen.

"I said that," Declan said. "I said it to her, in this bed, with my wife's best friend, while you were forty blocks away. It's the worst thing I have ever said."

"She wants me to hear it."

"She wants us both to bleed."

He took the phone out of my hand.

He did not say anything else.

He opened his own, and I watched his thumbs move.

He was typing to the family group chat.

It held his mother, his father, Hazel, both uncles and every cousin from Sunday's table.

He turned the screen so I could read it.
