"I haven't said a word to her," I said.

"I know." His jaw moved. "I'm trying not to look at that window."

The brother was still up there, phone pressed to the glass.

Ron came down the porch steps with his arms open, the warm voice switched back on.

"Lyle! Son! Family business. Jeff's had a little too much stress at work."

Lyle looked at him for the first time.

Ron stopped walking.

"Mr. Mattingly," Lyle said, "go inside. I'll talk to your son at the rehearsal. Not on your lawn."

Ron's mouth worked.

But he couldn't argue with the street watching.

He went up the steps and pulled Sharon in by the elbow, and the porch light went off.

In the dark, Lyle put both hands on top of his head.

"I was going to go right up those stairs."

"I know."

"You stopped me."

"I stood here."

"Same thing." He dropped his hands. "Then you tell me. All of it. Tonight. I'm not going home to her with nothing but his word."

"I have to drop Jeff off first."
