Chapter 17: The Loan Committee

I stood up from the table and walked out onto the back porch.

"Are you still there?" the bride said.

"I'm here."

"Is it true?"

"I've never been on that account," I said. "Not once. My name isn't on it. I couldn't take eighty dollars out of it, let alone eighty thousand."

"He said you'd say that."

"I'm sure he did."

She was quiet for a long time.

I could hear a car door somewhere, and someone calling her name, and her not answering.

"Sharon cried," she said. "She held my hands and cried and said you'd been bleeding them for months. Ron said he'd handle it. He said nothing would touch the wedding."

"What did your groom say?"

"He said, 'Babe, trust me.'" Her voice broke on it. "He's said that a lot this month."

"You don't have to decide anything today."

"I have to decide something by Friday."

She hung up.

I stood on the porch for a while.

Then I went back in and wrote my parents a promissory note on my laptop.

Twenty thousand dollars. Eighteen payments. No interest, because my father wouldn't sign it with interest.
