Chapter 10: Never Sick

I woke up with a mask on my face and a hand holding my wrist.

The ceiling was brown wood.

Somewhere near my ear a machine hissed.

"Slow," a voice said. "In through the nose. You're fine. You're not drowning."

I turned my head.

Calvin Ostrow sat on a plastic chair beside the cot, in a back room with a first-aid cabinet, and the green-fleece woman from the counter stood in the doorway.

His shirt had mud down the front, and his hands were not entirely steady.

"The nebulizer's from the station kit," he said. "You've had two treatments. The medic is twenty minutes out if you want him."

I pulled the mask down.

"I don't want him."

"Your inhaler was empty."

"I know that now."

"You walked two miles up a trail in a burn season with an empty inhaler."

"I didn't know it was empty."

"You didn't check." He said it flat. "Next time you check."

The woman in the doorway raised her eyebrows at him and went out, shutting the door.

I sat up slowly.

My chest still ached, but air went in and came out, and I had not known how good that felt until I nearly lost it.
