Chapter 31: The Price
I stepped out from behind the pine with my hands open and my heart in my ears.
Ronan turned.
He looked at me, and I watched him decide not to lie.
It would have been the worse thing, and he knew it.
"Nora," he said.
"Don't. I'll get to you."
I walked down the bank until I stood between the two men, near enough to smell Satterfield's wool coat and the faint metal under it.
"You crossed my water without guest-right," I said. "On your own two feet. My sentries will want a word."
"I crossed at a ford your own pack calls neutral." Satterfield inclined his head. "I'd like to show you what I came to say, Luna. Then you can have me thrown in the river."
He whistled, soft and low.
On the far bank, a lantern came up out of the dark.
Two Blackwater wolves wheeled a hand cart down to the water and across the shallows, and set it on our gravel.
A girl lay in it, on a blanket.
She was no older than Tilly.
Her wrists were strapped to the rails with soft cloth, though she wasn't fighting.
She wasn't doing anything at all.
Her face was dull and wet with fever, and every vein in her arms ran dark gray.
The lines climbed her throat to the jaw.
"Mine," Satterfield said. "Nineteen. She was a runner in my pit and the best I had."
His voice stayed level, but it had something in it that I didn't want to hear.
"I have buried forty wolves in two years, Luna. I don't lie about my dead."
"What is it?" I asked.
"A sickness. It starts in the hands. It has no cure that any of my healers can find, except one."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"You're a white," he said. "I'm told white blood quiets what nothing else will. Mrs. Hallett told me, when she came to us. She said you'd be kind about it."
