Chapter 33: What the Bite Left

I climbed off him without a word and pulled my dress down over my knees.

My hands were doing it without me.

Ronan sat up slowly, with the torn shirt hanging open, and didn't try to cover himself.

There was no point anymore.

"Tell me," I said. "Now. All of it, in order, and don't leave anything out because you think I can't hold it."

"Nora."

"I mean it."

He looked at his hands.

"The man with the cane bit me in the shoulder at the Challenge," he said. "You remember."

"I remember."

"He wore silver on his teeth. I smelled it when he came at me and I didn't care, because I wanted him on the boards. I was in a rage, and I let him take hold."

"It healed. It healed by morning, you said."

"The skin healed. The silver stayed."

His voice was very steady, which was how I knew how badly he was shaking.

"It stays in the blood. It moves slowly. For months I felt nothing, and then in April I picked up a cup at breakfast and couldn't hold it."

"April." I counted. "I was seven months along."

"I know."

"You said your arm was asleep."

"I said a lot of things."

"What does it do?"

"It climbs." He touched the lines on his chest, lightly. "The healer calls it the gray sickness. It starts in the hand. It reaches the heart in thirteen months."

"Thirteen months from the Challenge."

"The Hunt Moon."

The room tilted.

"And then?"

"Then my wolf goes out," he said. "And I go after it."

I sat down on the edge of the bed, because my legs had stopped working.

For a minute I couldn't speak.

I could hear the clock in the hall and the wind in the porch flowers.

"The bark," I said finally. "The black water at the creek."
