Chapter 8: What Dane Didn't Feel

I woke alone in Ronan's bed with the quilt tucked up to my chin.

A note lay on the pillow in his square handwriting: Council business. Back by dark. Eat something.

He hadn't signed it.

I read it twice, put it down, and got dressed with my teeth set.

Tilly was waiting in the kitchen house with a plate of pancakes and a face that said she knew everything.

"I heard the headboard," she said. "From the yard. The whole yard heard it."

"I'm going to die."

"You are not. You are going to eat, and then we are going to do something about this video."

She slid the phone across the table.

I watched Celia's hard little voice come out of it again, and Dane's bowed head.

"We can't give it to Ronan," I said. "He'd go for Celia and hand her the fight."

"So we give it to the elders."

"A video of a mother telling her son to cry? She'd say it was a family argument."

Tilly chewed, thinking.

"Then we go after the weak link," she said.

"Dane."

"He looks like he wants to throw up in that clip. Somebody's been working him like a puppet. Find him alone and play it."

I picked up my fork.

"You'd really let me go alone?"

"Absolutely not. I'm coming and I'm bringing a rolling pin."

I found him by the river at noon.
