Chapter 13: Five Stars

Dell read the email over my shoulder with her mouth open.

"She cc'd Keely," she said. "On your firing. That's like inviting the guy who ran you over to the funeral."

"It's not a funeral."

"Ro, you're on the floor in a blouse."

I sat up.

The spiral notebook slid off my chest onto the rug.

"Get me a coffee," I said. "I'm going to Chelsea."

"To do what?"

"To make her say it to my face."

I didn't wear the wig.

I wore my own black coat, my own boots with a heel and my hair down my back.

I hadn't walked into the Guide as myself in a week.

The receptionist looked up this time.

She looked twice.

Upstairs the whole office was standing around a box of pastries on the long table by the window.

There was a card stuck in it. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE KINSELLA.

Keely stood in the middle of it, in pearls, holding a coffee and a cruller.

She saw me and her smile went smooth.

"Romy." She put the cruller down. "Oh, honey. You shouldn't have come in."

"I came for my editor."

The glass door was already opening.

The editor-in-chief stood in it with her reading glasses pushed up into her gray hair.

"Miss Cotter. You've had my email."

"I've had it," I said. "I'd like you to say it out loud. Here. In front of everyone who watched you suspend me."

Twenty people stopped chewing.

The editor looked at me for a long moment.

Then she stepped out of her office.

"The Kinsella schedule was opened through your account," she said, clearly, to the room. "The dates were disclosed. You're dismissed for cause. Effective this morning."

"Thank you," I said.

Keely sighed beside the pastries.

"I tried, Romy. I really did. I told her you'd never do it on purpose."
