Chapter 21: Forty Names

Nobody in the corridor said a word.

The line cook found his own name and put his finger on it.

A housekeeper behind me started crying without any sound.

Dell read her name twice.

Then she turned around and smiled at me, a big brave terrible smile.

"Well," she said. "At least I'm fourth. I always wanted to be in the top five of something."

Nobody laughed.

I looked at the forty names.

Then I looked at the faces around me.

I'd spent six years walking into rooms and counting what was wrong in them.

I'd never once tried to fix one.

I took a chair from the cafeteria doorway and stood on it.

Jane's voice came out anyway, slow and low and loud enough for the end of the corridor.

"He wants you to read that and go home quiet," I said. "That's why it's on the wall at one in the morning. So you find it alone."

They were looking up at me now.

"So what do we do?" the line cook said. "Sue him? With what?"

"No," I said. "December twelfth. The centennial. Four hundred guests in the ballroom, the board, the press and the woman from the Guide who gave him his star."
