Chapter 28: Sunday in Bayonne
"Every day," I told Colm. "Two nights, any time this year. She wouldn't even tell me the season."
"Then we're ready every day," he said.
So we were.
December went by in towels.
The linen budget came back from wherever Ryland had sent it.
The head housekeeper burned an old towel from eleven in the alley while her girls cheered.
The thumbprint on the elevator brass came off every hour, on a schedule the night bellman wrote himself.
The lobby radio went, and a piano player came at five.
He never once played an ad for a mattress.
I walked every floor every day, in my own face, with a clipboard.
On the second Sunday in January, Colm drove me to Bayonne to meet my parents.
He'd asked three times if they wanted to meet him.
"They've seen you on the news," I said. "Dad has a question about your nose."
"What question?"
"He'll ask you himself."
Dell rode in the back with two pies on her lap and gave Colm directions he didn't need.
Then she corrected his parking for the whole length of our street.
