Chapter 17: Rosalind Moves
The hall television showed the front gate of the Stannard house, lit white by a news truck.
Rosalind stood in the beam in a camel coat, with her eyes red and her blonde hair perfect.
"I only wanted to tell the truth," she said into six microphones.
"The woman in that kitchen took a check from the Stannard family seven years ago. Fifty thousand dollars, for the sight she gave."
"She took it and she ran."
She held a long green paper up to the cameras.
"Now she's back for a million dollars. And I'll tell you why she needs it."
Her voice dropped, trembling with the thrill of it.
"She's going blind, the same way her mother did. She is a sick woman looking for a rich man to pay her doctors."
The butler reached for the remote.
"Leave it on," I said.
Phillip's hand closed on my arm.
"You don't need to."
"I do."
I walked out of the library and down the front hall, past the coat stand and the long mirror.
Phillip walked at my left, where the edge was worst.
He said nothing.
