The house closed on Friday, June twenty-sixth, at eleven in the morning.

I learned this from Grandma's attorney, who called my new phone at noon and said only, "It's done, Ms. Carroway. Four o'clock, your grandmother's table."

I arrived at ten to four in my work shoes, because I had a shift at five.

Noah drove me and parked at the curb with the windows down.

"I'll be right here," he said.

"You don't have to."

"I know. I'm a very patient parker."

Grandma met me at the door with her sleeves rolled up.

She had set the kitchen table with the yellow cloth and a plate of lemon bars.

The attorney sat at one end, a gray-haired woman with a leather case and reading glasses on a chain.

Penelope sat on the stairs with her knees up.

Dad was at the table already.

He looked like a man who had been left out in the weather.

His shirt was clean, but it hung on him, and he no longer wore a tie.

Penelope had told me he had a job now at a lumber rental yard across the county.
