Chapter 19: What Preston Says
Preston came up the side steps slowly.
Benedict was suddenly at the bottom of them.
I hadn't seen him leave his seat.
"It's all right," I said.
Benedict didn't move.
"It's all right," I said again, and he stepped back one pace, which for Benedict was a speech.
Kenzie's microphone was lying on the stage where she'd dropped it.
Preston bent down and picked it up.
He tapped it twice. It worked.
The crowd had started to sit back down, slowly.
The stream counter on the side screen said six hundred thousand.
Preston looked at it.
"Good," he said. "Leave it on."
He turned to face the theater.
"My name's Preston Elstow. I'm the ex who failed. That's what the poster says." He swallowed. "It's wrong. I didn't fail a test. I wrote one."
Nobody made a sound.
"The test was my idea. Everyone else just built it." He pointed at the screen, where my mother's text was still frozen. "And my mother put sesame on the table because Deanna's own mother told her to make it look real. I knew. I sat next to Deanna and watched her eat rice and I knew."
