Chapter 6: The Toast

By one o'clock there were forty-one people in my backyard.

Calvin's mother had brought the cake, and his sister had brought three kinds of potato salad.

There was a banner across the fence that said CONGRATULATIONS, JUNE, and balloons tied to every chair.

June had texted at noon.

Running late, driving back from my friend's. Start without me.

Calvin stood at the grill in his apron, laughing at something his brother-in-law said.

He had not looked at me directly since breakfast.

He kept touching my elbow in front of people, lightly, to show everyone how well we were.

"Smile," he murmured the first time.

I smiled.

At one thirty he tapped a fork against a glass.

"Everybody. Before the guest of honor gets here, a few words."

Forty-one people turned toward him.

Calvin raised his drink.

"Eighteen years ago, a very small person made me a father. Today she graduated first in her class." He let the pause hang. "I want to thank the woman who made that possible. My wife."

Everyone clapped.

He held out his hand to bring me up beside him.

I stepped up beside him, and I took the glass out of his other hand.

"Thank you," I said. "I'd like to say something too."

Calvin's smile held.

His fingers tightened on my arm.

"Sonya," he said softly. "Not now."

"I'll be quick."

I set the glass on the table.

From the pocket of my dress I took the folded log, the printed photograph from the steps, and a single sheet with the Linden Court letterhead.
