Chapter 15: Vivian's Offer
Vivian slept in the east room, the one Russell had kept for me.
On Sunday morning she came down in my cardigan, with her makeup gone and her hair in a clip.
Posy looked at her over a bowl of cereal.
"Are you the lady who wanted to marry Daddy?"
"I was," Vivian said. "I'm sorry about that."
"Can you braid?"
Vivian looked at her own hands.
"No. Nobody ever taught me."
"Lorna's learning," Posy said. "She does it crooked."
"I do it crooked," I agreed.
So I sat at the kitchen table at eight in the morning with my sister.
A five-year-old sat between us, and we both got the same braid wrong.
Ricky watched from the doorway with his arms crossed.
He didn't say a word, and he didn't leave.
After breakfast Vivian took me out onto the back porch, where the cove lay flat and gray.
She sat on the step with her knees together, and she picked at a thread in my cardigan.
"I used to wake up screaming," she said. "Did Mother tell you?"
