Chapter 16: Her Own Bed

Lulu's POV

We came in through the kitchen at four in the morning, with the stove ticking and the sky going grey over the sink.

I took his hand and led him up the stairs.

The third step creaked, the way it had since I was small, and we both stopped.

Nothing stirred.

At the top of the landing my mother's door stood closed.

He slowed beside it.

I felt him stop and felt what it cost him.

"Not there," he said, low.

"No."

"It's still her room."

"I know. I'm not taking you in there." I turned and looked at him. "That's hers. This is mine."

I opened my own door, the one with the chip in the paint where I'd thrown a boot at it when I was thirteen.

The room was small and smelled like me.

A quilt, a window, a shelf of ribbons from the county fair, a narrow bed against the wall.

He stood in the doorway with his hat in his hand, a tall man ducking under a low frame.

"I told you," he said. "Not in the house."

"You told me that in the barn."

"I meant it."

"You meant it in the barn," I said. "Say it to me again."

He didn't.

I went to him and took the hat out of his hand and hung it on my bedpost.

Then I took his shirt off.

I did it slowly this time, one button at a time, kissing the skin I uncovered, and he stood with his hands hanging at his sides.

"You're shaking," I said.

"I know."

"Tell me why."

"Because you're in your own room." His voice was rough. "And I'm in it. And nobody has ever let me in anywhere I shouldn't be, Lulu, and made it feel like I was invited."
