Chapter 17: Fiancee
I walked across the ballroom with two hundred people watching and my husband one step behind.
The reporter in the red blazer saw me coming and lit up.
"Mrs. Rausch," she said. "Would you like to respond?"
"I'd like to ask Mr. Lasker a question," I said. "On camera, if that's all right."
Cody turned.
For a half second, I saw the old panic cross his face, and then the smile slid on over it.
"Jean. Babe. I didn't know you'd be here."
"I told you to bring the cats," I said. "That's what you texted me. Did you forget?"
A nervous laugh rippled through the crowd.
I held up a folded paper.
"This is a withdrawal slip from a branch on Grand Avenue," I said. "It's dated the sixteenth of October at 8:40 in the morning. It's for forty-one thousand dollars, in cash. It has your signature on it, Cody, and a memo line that says 'house fund.'"
"That was our money."
"Yes. Hers and mine. I put in thirty-eight thousand of it over six years. You put in three."
The reporter's pen stopped.
"That's an exaggeration," Cody said.
"Then tell me where it is."
"It's invested."
"In what?"
"In, uh. A fund."
"What fund?"
"I'm not required to discuss my finances at a cocktail party."
"You did a radio interview about my love life in front of a news camera."
Somebody laughed out loud.
I took one step closer.
"One minute you told us you were heartbroken. Now it's none of our business. Which is it?"
"This is harassment."
"It's a question."
Cody looked around for a friendly face.
He found the reporter's, and it had gone flat and watchful.
He found Lyle's, at the foot of the staircase, and it gave him nothing.
