Chapter 23: Both Shores
Both packs came down to the north pier at dusk, and for the first time in sixty years nobody carried a weapon.
The iron planks had been scrubbed of soot.
My scorch marks still showed along the rail, and nobody had asked me to sand them down.
Lake Shore's wolves lined the shore side with paper lanterns in their hands.
Westpoint's wolves lined the water side in rowboats, forty of them, tied bow to stern in a long dark chain.
Between them the lake lay flat as slate, and the last of the ice drifted past in white plates.
I stood on the pier head with my mother's locket on its mended chain around my neck.
Tilda stood beside me in a grey coat with the baby wrapped against her chest.
The child slept with one fist against her cheek and a cap of dark fuzz.
Hattie stood on my other side, in a clean denim jacket that was somehow already torn.
"If I cry, tell no one," she said.
"You're crying now."
"That's pollen."
"It's April, and the lake is frozen."
"It's very strong pollen."
