Chapter 22: Travis Alone
I went out and sat on the porch step, one step below my cousin, and I didn't say anything for a while.
He didn't either.
"The dealership let me go Friday," Travis said finally.
"I'm sorry."
"The owner read the commission story in the paper, and he said a man who signs options on land he doesn't own isn't a man he wants selling his tractors."
"He was right. That's the worst part."
"Where are you staying?"
"Nowhere. I sublet the apartment through the end of the month, and I sold the boat."
"You had a boat?"
"I had a boat, Case. I'm thirty-five. I had a boat and a polo shirt."
I tried not to smile and he saw it, and for one second the Travis who used to chase me around the hay bales at Thanksgiving looked out of his face.
"Why did you need the money so bad?" I asked.
He turned his hands over and looked at the palms.
"After Dad died, Mom took out a second mortgage on the house. For the hospital, and the funeral, and the two years he was sick."
"I didn't know that."
"Nobody did. She wasn't going to tell you. She sent plates to Grandpa every Sunday and signed for the payment on Monday."
"The bank was going to take the house in March."
"So you borrowed against a farm you didn't own."
"A hundred and eighty thousand, on a signed option. I figured the farm was going to be mine anyway. Gramps said so every Christmas."
"I paid off the house in April. She doesn't know it came from me. She thinks it was the dealership bonus."
I thought of Ginny in her Buick in her driveway, eating chicken alone.
"I'm not giving you the farm," I said.
"I know."
"And I'm not paying your loan. And you can't have the house, or the bunkhouse."
