Chapter 13: In Front of Them

By seven the phones had stopped ringing, because both of them had been switched off.

It did not help. The city kept talking without them.

Haoran stood at the glass wall in yesterday's shirt, reading the notices his assistant had slid under the door.

"The board met at six," he said. "Emergency vote. I'm suspended from Lu Pictures until an inquiry."

"On what ground?" Wenxin asked.

"Conduct unbecoming. Moral clause." He set the paper down. "Madam wrote the clause eleven years ago."

Wenxin pulled his shirt over her shoulders, since it was the nearest thing, and read the paper twice.

It named her once, as "the wife of a family member."

Not Wenxin. Not Miss Tang. A wife.

"Is there a way out of this?" she said.

"If I stay quiet, they suspend me for ninety days and the film stops. If I speak, I tell them you were a victim of a powerful man."

"Was I?"

His mouth moved. "That's the line my lawyer wrote."

She looked at the paper again.

"Then I won't be one," Wenxin said.

She dressed in last night's gown, because it was all she had, and he gave her his jacket against the cold.

Downstairs the street was full.

Cameras, lenses, a hundred phones raised at once. The reporters shouted before the doors had finished opening.

"Miss Tang! Is it true you're married to Mr. Lu's brother?"

"Mr. Lu, did you use the lead role?"

"Is Lu Pictures casting through the bedroom?"
