Chapter 21: Two Pink Lines

Maggie's POV

On Thursday, Brody walked me to the library and kissed me at the glass doors in front of the whole line for the copier.

"I'm coming with you tonight," he said.

"No."

"Maggie."

"Cody asked for me. Kayla will say it's an ambush if you're in the room."

"She'll say it's an ambush anyway."

"Then let her say it about me." I straightened his collar. "I'll record everything, and I'll text you every half hour."

He took a long breath.

"Nate drives you."

"Nate drives me, waits in the truck, and doesn't come in."

"Nate will come in."

"Then Nate gets one sentence."

He almost smiled.

At six I closed the desk, put on my coat, and found Nate leaning on the truck outside with a bag of sour gummy worms.

"One sentence," he said, before I could speak. "If I hear a scream, I'm coming through the door."

"That's two sentences."

"Rounding down."

Cody's house on Maple Street smelled like cinnamon candle and old pizza.

I had walked up those steps two hundred times without knocking.

Tonight I knocked.

Cody opened the door in the plain blue shirt, and his face was gray.

"Thanks for coming."

"You said there was something."

"There is." He swallowed. "Come in."

In the hallway he put a hand on the wall and kept his voice low.
