Chapter 18: The Letter to the Packs
Cadoc pulled the spear out of the sand and held the letter out to Torren.
Torren shook his head.
"It's addressed to the packs," he said. "Let the packs hear it."
Every wolf in the hold had come down to the bank by then, and half of Ashfen's wounded were leaning on the infirmary wall behind us.
I took the paper myself.
"If it's for everyone," I said, "I'll read it."
Cadoc looked at the seal, and then at me.
"You don't have to."
"If someone else reads it, they'll read it kindly."
I broke my father's wax with my thumb.
His hand was beautiful, and it always had been, long and even and sure of itself.
"To the packs of the Aldwater, from Tavish Ravenhill, Alpha of Ashfen," I read.
"Eleven years ago I lost my wife, and since that day I have wanted only peace."
"I sent the last of my family across the river as a gift, a healer and a daughter, in good faith."
