The sutra room had one lamp, one mat, and a laptop on the low table.
Hanzhou had pushed the card into the slot himself, and his hand had not been quite steady.
Outside the door, Qin Wanyi and the old lawyer waited on a bench, because Hanzhou had asked them to.
Shen Ke sat beside him on the mat, close enough that their knees touched.
"Part A is for the banquet," said Hanzhou. "I will play only the second."
A file opened.
On the screen sat the late chairman at his desk in the study, in a grey cardigan, in the evening light.
He looked thinner than the portrait in the hall.
He rubbed his face once with one hand, and looked straight into the lens.
"Hanzhou," said the man on the screen. "If you are watching this, it is the forty-eighth night, and my mother kept my rule. Don't be angry with her."
Hanzhou made no sound.
"I am going to say this badly," said his father. "I am better at contracts."
On the mat, Shen Ke felt the whole body beside his go still.
"First. I am sorry about your mother's funeral. You were nine. I put you in a corner in a suit that was too small, and I told you that men don't cry."
