Chapter 13: His Side of the Bed

Hoyt's POV

I carried her off the rim in my arms, wrapped in my coat.

The whole council walked down the trail behind us without a word.

At the yard Dub took the rifles from the others, and Arlo went to see about the heifers.

Jolene put the blue coffeepot on the stove and looked at me over her shoulder.

"Take her upstairs, Daddy," she said.

I had sent Dessa to the bunkhouse on the first night, with a lock she owned, and I had called that a rule.

I broke it on the third stair.

Nobody but me had slept in my room in eleven years.

I had built the bed myself out of ash, because nothing I bought would hold me.

I set her down on the edge of it.

I knelt on the plank floor and washed the blood off her feet with a warm cloth.

She let me do it.

She stared at the wall and did not say a word, and her toes curled each time the cloth touched a cut.

"I didn't sleep that first night," I said.

"You were in the bunkhouse, and Dub was on the porch, and I was standing in the dark at the corner of the barn."

"At two in the morning the door of the bunkhouse opened by itself," I said.

"A wolf came down those steps, pale as milk and bigger than I am."

She turned her head.

"It walked straight across the yard to me," I said.

"It stopped three feet off and looked me in the face, and I said your name, very quietly."
