Chapter 18: Seven Months
The baby kicked so hard that Boone's coffee jumped in the cup.
We were at the kitchen table in the main house, late on a Sunday in April, with snow melting off the porch roof outside.
I was seven months along.
"There," I said, and took his big hand and put it low on my left side. "Wait for it."
He waited.
He held his breath and stared at the wall.
The baby kicked his palm.
His whole face opened.
"That's a foot," he said. "That's a boot. That's a cowboy."
"Or a soccer player."
"It's a Culbertson. It's already pushing a man around."
"It gets that from me," I said.
He laughed, and he kissed my belly through my sweater, and he stayed there with his ear against it.
I put my hand in his hair.
He had earned most of it by then, with every hard morning since January.
