Chapter 15: The Host at the River
We met the host at the river road with the sun straight overhead.
Thirty of Tobin's men rode behind us, and every horse was lathered white.
The column of Kaldmark soldiers stretched along the water as far as I could see, grey cloaks and long spears.
Three thousand men, walking in step.
A rider in front saw us and shouted, and the whole column slowed.
"Let me speak first," Corradin said.
"Gladly," Tobin said. "You've had practice being hated."
Corradin urged his black horse forward alone.
He took a silver wolf's head on a cord from inside his collar and held it up in the sun.
The seal flashed.
"Halt the host," he said. His voice carried like a bell. "In the name of the crown prince of Kaldmark."
The marching stopped in waves, from the front to the back.
A broad man on a brown horse rode out to meet him, grey in the beard, with a scar across his nose.
He wore a commander's collar of silver links and he saluted the seal, not the prince.
