Chapter 20: Void
He wrote it on the yellow pad, in the study, in capitals, with his glasses pushed up into his hair.
PROPOSED AMENDMENT 6.
The Agreement dated October 20 is void in every page and every clause.
The sum paid to Lyle Brockway is a gift and is not repayable.
He stopped and looked at me.
"If we void it," he said, "we've destroyed an agreement the week after my uncle demanded one."
"We haven't destroyed anything. We've signed the end of it."
"He'll say we backdated."
"Then we won't backdate. We'll date it tonight, with a witness and a stamp."
"A notary at ten o'clock on a Monday?"
"I know a notary."
I called my father and asked him to go next door and wake the neighbor.
Our next-door neighbor on Edgemont Street has been a notary public for thirty years.
She took the phone in her housecoat.
"Livvy, honey," she said. "I'll get my stamp."
She was in the townhouse kitchen in twenty-five minutes, in her good coat, with a canvas bag, a pen and a Tupperware of cookies.
She'd never been to Rittenhouse Square.
She looked at the ceiling, and the chandelier, and Sebastian's espresso machine, and said, "Well, now I know what the fuss was about."
