Chapter 31: The Ridge

I looked down at him in the gravel.

"We're already married," I said.

"I know."

"The Elder bound us. We have the marks."

"I know. Answer the question."

"You're getting your jeans wet."

"Rae."

I took his hand.

"Yes," I said. "Get up before your knee freezes."

He got up. He did it in one smooth push, with nothing to hold on to but me.

"Saturday," he said.

"That's four days."

"I've waited long enough to stand at a wedding."

On Saturday, the whole pack drove the fire road to the top of the ridge.

The sky was clear and hard and blue. Snow lay in the cracks of the rock.

I wore a dress I'd picked myself, in a shop in Missoula, on my own.

Wanda sat by the stone in a chair with big knobby tires.

Granger had built it for her out of his old wheelchair and the wheels off her rusted four-wheeler.

"It handles like a shopping cart," she'd said when he gave it to her.

Then she'd driven it in circles around the yard for an hour.

The strays stood together in front.

The twins wore matching dresses they'd fought about all week.

When I looked for him, he was looking at me, and his eyes were wet, and he didn't look away.

The one-eyed warrior had brought a fiddle. He played it badly and nobody cared.

I walked from the edge of the Ladder to the stone.

Nobody laughed.

Granger was waiting at the stone in a dark suit that fit him, standing on his own two feet.
